Have you ever recieved a gift that was a favorite? What was it? Why was it so special?
A few years ago as a Christmas gift my parents gave me a book called: Stories Behind the Best-Loved Songs of Christmas by Ace Collins. This has always been one of my favorite gifts. All of the stories are very interesting so I thought I would share one with y'all.
It is highly debated where The First Noel originated however is one of the oldest Christmas songs. Both England and France claim the carol was originally their's.
The most common spelling is the French Noel which would lead to a favoring of French origin. Another spelling is Nowell which is a more old english version. Regardless it sung all over the world.
There is much that can be gleaned about the writer even though the identity of the original lyricist is unknown. One fact is the writer was estatic about their faith. However a few details are a touch mixed up. For instance the shepherds are following the star to find the Christ child. Of course during the time period The First Noel was written bibles were not common and most of the population was illiterate, so as a result the stories were well known however some details were changed in telling.
in the end although the writer may have misunderstood a few details however the esscence of the celebration is still clear in the words. The writer had faith and clearly understood the true reason for Christmas and was anxious to share it.
As I post this it is Christmas Eve. This is a time for celebration with family. So I wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
